This degree aims to provide an understanding of the works of John Milton in relation to their political, social and literary contexts. All students take courses in the works of Milton and the methods and materials of research, with further courses on contemporary and related authors, and advanced ways of working with individual renaissance texts; subject to approval, students may propose their own topic for study. A dissertation is also required.

This degree gives wide-ranging consideration to the meaning and value of post modernism in relation to literary and cultural studies. All students take a course on post modernism and contemporary theory, and options include post modern drama, post modern literature (fiction and poetry), language text and computing culture, and popular culture and cultural value.
